These are my reasons for appreciating the music that The White Stripes produce. For those of whom have listened to their new single "Icky Thump" you realized that you either really like or really dislike the White Stripes. For those who dislike, your reason might be that Meg Whites Drumming is the worst you ever heard. Actually its not because bad drumming comes from someone who has no rythmn. Meg keeps the beat, but its a simple and heavy one. Others might say that it is disorganized. If you don't like it because of that you are overreacting. Its not disorganized. It has awesome riffs. Even if it was disorganized, that shouldn't get in the way of the music.
For those of you who like it, your awesome.

Gunn, I feel like you are failing to understand what rad riffs are. Metallica has rad riffs, zepplin has rad riffs, aerosmith, lennykravitz,GnR, have rad riffs. White stripes have ok kinda catchy riffs. Rad is a word that you are using without considering its meaning and the standards that go with using it. Learn to play a white stripe riff on the guitar, then learn how to play one of those other bands riffs, and you tell me what is rad and what is mediocre then.
you got me there Jason. I agree. But I wasn't trying to get that they're riffs are good, I just wanted people to understand that they do make good music. But I think I may have a better understanding of what a rad riff is. Thanks.
You are welcome. I'll be here all week.
Since when has Lenny Kravitz constructed anything that could be classified as a Rad Riff?
And in agreement with Gunn, the Strite Whipes do occasionaly pull out a good one, riffwise. Blue Orchid for example.
Tom Im disappointed in you. "are you gonna go my way""rocknroll is dead""always on the run" those 3 are hardcore rad. And blue orchid is a decent riff, kinda sounds stock, like ive heard it at basketball games, but their ONLY other good riff is the army one of of the first album, everything else is a bore.
jason, you obviously have not heard Icky Thump.
Gunn, icky thump is actually a loose rip-off of one of my own songs i wrote. You may even ask davis, i wrote it 2 years ago. And i bet he would even tell you mine is better. Which it of course is. I would think the song was ok, except that the guy sounds like a screaching cat on the vocals.
If your song is so much better than the white stripes, How come theirs is on te radio and you haven't gone anywhere in two years?
I know a guy who is 10 times the guitar player than joe perry, slash, lenny kravitz and others, but he is just a guy with a guitar at home. Some of the best guitarists in the world will never see radio waves, and thats ok. But crap is all over the radio, how does linkin park get on the radio, how does coldplay, they both suck, but its not about how good you are. It never has been.
if this guy you speak is as good as he is to waste time learning to play good guitar he would have been somewhere. I think that you also don't understand that good music doesn't have to have a rad riff in it. Ben Folds not only plays a mean piano but also has good composition in his music. And you may think that the white stripes music is way two simple but its composition is still well thought of.
Gunn, i remember when you were a little bun. The experience you have here is starting to remind me of that bun. Composition? How many instruments do you play? How many songs more importantly have you composed yourself. How many rock bands have you been in to witness how a song is composed.Ill pretend you didnt use the phrase "plays a mean piano". And i wont grant you the statement that good music doesnt have to have a rad riff in it. If its good it has a riff no matter what. Because riffs are just notes that reoccur in the same order. Beethoven used riffs, to appeal to your interest in the piano. But i wouldnt call them mean riffs. And no, about that guy who is as good as i say. Lots of guys are really really good, and they have played nowhere but in their room. Try going on youtube and watching how good all these nerds are that sit in their room and do nothing but play guitar. I have seen some rediculously impressive stuff, and they will never have a record contract. Skill has nothing to do with radio play time. The composition of the white stripes is ok, mediocre at best. In fact most people think that is their weakness, if you read around on random blogs by google-ing the white stripes, you can read how many think the singer sucks, and how the music is chaotic. I wouldnt call it chaotic, but i would say they are very sloppy, chords dont end on time, lots of sound bleedover, not a whole lot of precision. I would say their composition is simple, which isnt bad, a lot of simple things can be good; but theirs is just simple and boring to me. You are welcome to enjoy them tho, ill permit you to like them. But if you ever wanna hear some real music, ask davis where you should start with some metallica. You might get some chest hair by listening to that.
Honestly, I have more respect for the people who make it somewhere and aren't the best instead of the nerds who sit in their rooms and play guitar all day and don't do anything about because they are incompetant. The I have more respect for a band like the Scissor Sisters because they actually went out and made funky tunes and, this next one might appall you but, they made some rad riffs. They didn't stay at home sitting in their closets. I also disagree that the white stripes are as chaotic as you think they are, but in the end I guess its a matter of opinion. By the way I like Metalica. And I already have chest hair.
Gunn-bob, its not that people who rock on the guitar sit at home and just do nothing. In case you havent noticed its not easy to get a record deal. The ones that do, its usually because their nephews brother works at the record label. There are like very few cases where bands pursued the label and won. Even tho some people are awesome at guitar or drums, its not easy to put bands together either. Its not that they dont try its that it doesnt always come together. And i will always respect skill in a closet over no skill at my fingertips or on the radio or whatever.
